Meet Cotton on Earth Day 2017

Today 22 April 2017 is Earth Day

Let’s meet with Cotton, one of the earth’s gifts that provide loads of benefits to our life, including in the process of making woven fabric.

Cotton is a fiber that produced by a cotton plant (Gossypium Hirsutum). This cotton plant has many species, estimated about 30-40 species spread all over the world. Species that most widely used for clothing production is Gossypium Hirsutum cotton whose rate of use reaches 90% of cotton production in the world.

The plant is a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including America, Africa, and India. In Indonesia alone, some cotton-producing areas are Java Island, NTB, NTT, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and Bengkulu.

Cotton fiber becomes a valuable material in the textile industry. The fiber can be spun into yarn and woven into a fabric, including into Indonesian woven fabrics in many areas.
